At the Jerusalem Plank Road in June 1864 Brig. Gen. Francis C. Barlow, U.S.A. found himself opposed by Brig. Gen. William Mahone, C.S.A., who he had last fought and beaten at Seven Pines in 1862. This time however Mahone would prevail.

About the Event
The Battle of Jerusalem Plank Road (also known as the First Battle of Weldon Railroad), which took place on June 21–23, 1864 was the central event of the Grant's Second Petersburg Offensive, between June 18-July 1, 1864. John Horn looks at the battle through its main protagonists, Brig. Gen. Francis C. Barlow, U.S.A., and Brig. Gen. William Mahone, C.S.A. Barlow was a brave, though unlucky, general and a great lawyer. He and ‘Billy’ Mahone had both undergone baptisms of fire at the battle of Fair Oaks/Seven Pines on June 1, 1862. There Barlow prevailed. At Jerusalem Plank Road in 1864, Mahone won and established himself as one of the pillars of Petersburg's defence.
