About the Meeting

For many years Robert E Lee has been lionized by America in general and the American military establishment in particular.  To our speaker Bryan Gladstone this seemed at odds with his reading of the course of the Civil War. In this talk he will concentrate on Lee's generalship in the 12 months leading up to Gettysburg, when his legend was established.  This period saw him at his best and his worst, his greatest victories and his greatest defeat. 


The talk draws on a  range of recent papers produced by senior American military figures which seek to explore what Lee's generalship can teach modern American military leaders. The primary focus is on two aspects of military leadership: the relationship between strategic, operational and tactical decisions; and reasoning and intuition in battle tactics.  It concludes that Lee was both greater and more flawed than usually depicted, and still worthy…
