About the Event

In 1863 Lieutenant Colonel Arthur James Lyon Fremantle of the Coldstream Guards took a leave of absence from his military duties to spend time travelling across America - predominantly through the Southern states. On his travels he met many of the key Confederate characters of the Civil War, observed aspects of the war at close-hand, and maintained a diary of his experiences. The diary was published in Britain in late 1863 and in America in early 1864. as Three Months in the Southern States, April–June 1863. It attracted considerable interest on both sides of the Atlantic and has been quoted and referenced ever since. On his return from America Fremantle went on to have an illustrious military career, one which many of his peers would likely have considered high achieving, but his fame and legacy today are almost entirely based on his famous book.

Fremantle’s book will be familiar…
