The Western Theatre Comes East: The Battle of Bentonville
Sat 23 May
|By Zoom
Fought on March 19–21, 1865, the Battle of Bentonville was soon overshadowed by other events in the collapse of the Confederacy. Derrick Brown's talk re-assesses Bentonville's importance in its 1865 context, as one of the final nails in the proverbial Confederate coffin.

About the Event
Fought barely three weeks before Appomattox, the March 1865 Battle of Bentonville was the largest battle ever fought in North Carolina and one of the last major engagements of the Civil War. Bentonville was the only full-scale attempt by the Confederates to destroy or at least cripple a portion of Major Geneal William T. Sherman’s force as it marched through the Carolinas. The battle resulted in nearly 4,200 casualties.
Bentonville made national headlines in the days and weeks following the battle but was soon replaced in print and memory by events such as the fall of Richmond, Lee’s surrender, and the Lincoln assassination. However, participants on both sides compared its savagery to Gettysburg and Chickamauga.
