Great Britain in the American Civil War

ree

In June this year Chris Mackowski of Emerging Civil War (and who we are proud to say is also a member of the UK Round Table) hosted a discussion about the state of the British army and navy at the time of the American Civil War, and what might have been the impact of British involvement in the conflict.  The UK participants were Chris Brice of the Victorian Military Society and former editor of the Helion series of books Musket to Maxim, 1815-1914, and Michael Somerville, former President of the UK Round Table and author of Bull Run to Boer War: How the American Civil War changed the British Army .

The latest issue of Crossfire features a follow-up article by Michael about the subject.  Crossfire is only available to members of the UK Round Table, but the article has also been published in the latest Militaria magazine, edited by well known British historian Saul David, available in both paperback and ebook formats. This issue of Militaria is of added interest to US Civil War buffs as it also features an article by UK Round Table member Jeremy Mindell asking whether Gettysburg really was the turning point of the war.

The podcast is still available to listen to on the Emerging Civil War website
