Along with the rest of the American Civil War community we were saddened last month to hear of the death of Steve Davis. Steve was a valued contributor to our group, and the ACWRT UK would like to add its own small tribute to the reflections already made on his passing.
Our former president Greg Bayne writes:
We had the honour of hosting Steve Davis, along with Frank O’Reilly at our 2014 Conference – 1864 Bullets and Ballots at Ascot. We knew of him through his writings but we couldn’t predict the impact he would make on our Trojan band. On day one, this tall gangly scarecrow of a man in a pale suit and larger than life bow-tie took to the stage and bellowed “HI Y’ALL. I AM SO HAPPY TO BE HERE – LET’S GO!”
We were instructed and entertained and by the end of the weekend even the most ardent Unionist felt some sympathy with the denizens of Atlanta.
I used to send him Crossfire and I know that he helped Peter Lockwood with some tours. Our roving members would also touch base with him on their travels. He was always complimentary about the articles that interested him and started to send me one or two which I was happy to uses. In turn he was always grateful that I did that. In my view his best was Spring 2021 “Bonnie Blue Flop” in which Confederate strategy in the West slowly unravelled.
He was unique amongst the unique. The kind of historian that we will miss.
God speed Y’all!
Bob Fugate, who is a member of both the Atlanta Round Table and our own group, was a close friend of Steve and adds the following tribute:
I know he visited you in the past and wrote articles for Crossfire. When I first was looking for speakers for your Atlanta conference, I called Steve and learned that he was through with travel. I really enjoyed his talk and his books. He had a very stimulating and extremely erudite perspective on the Late Unpleasantness and will be greatly missed.
