We opened our 2021 online programme on January 23 with a highly controversial talk and discussion on the life and historiography of one of the Civil War’s most important characters, Ulysses S Grant.
Joseph Rose presented evidence from his book, Grant Under Fire that challenges Ulysses S. Grant’s reputation as a military genius and reliable chronicler of the Civil War, in particular suggesting that statements in his memoirs are contradicted by Grant's original reports and those of others at the time.
