The Battle of Shepherdstown, 19-20 September 1862


On 19-20 September 1862, Shepherdstown in Virginia (now West Virginia) saw the last battle of the Maryland campaign. On the anniversary of the battle in 2025, we were given a talk about it by Kevin Pawlak, who is a Historic Site Manager for the Prince William County Office of Historic Preservation, a certified guide at Antietam National Battlefield and Harpers Ferry National Historical Parks, and chairs the Antietam Institute's Publications Committee, where he serves as the editor of the biannual Antietam Journal. In this talk he delves into the details of this overlooked battle, and explains the lasting impact of Shepherdstown on the overall Maryland Campaign.
